The first four lines of this song are from an old ballad called " The Strong Walls of Deny,"—which does not leave a great deal to be claimed by Burns, who made the remainder.
The old melody to which it is set is called " Portmore." The song was a favorite in the repertoire of Henry Eussell, set to music of his own.
